‘The Mysterious Benedict Society’ moved from Hulu to Disney+

Dana Walden

Disney+ has picked up a series originally destined for streaming stablemate Hulu, with The Mysterious Benedict Society set to premiere on the service next year.

This is the first time that Disney+ has taken a show first developed for Hulu, though there has previously been movement in the other direction, with titles such as High Fidelity ending up on Hulu.

Disney’s chairman of entertainment Dana Walden described Disney+ as the “perfect fit” for the show, explaining the move for the young adult series to the family-friendly platform.

“One of the great benefits to creators working with our company is that we have a platform that’s right for every series, and having seen the first few episodes of this show, there is no better home for it than Disney+,” said Walden.

Based on the books written by Trenton Lee Stewart, the eight-part series follows a group of orphans placed undercover at boarding school known as The Institute, who must foil a nefarious plot with global ramifications.

The series is being produced (and exec produced) by Disney Television Studios-owned 20th Television, with Sonar Entertainment, Jamie Tarses, Karen Kehela Sherwood and writer-creators Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay also attached as exec producers. Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin will serve as showrunners.

Tony Hale will lead a cast that also includes Kristen Schaal, Ryan Hurst and MaameYaa Boafo.
