ORF and ZDF take a second stab at ‘Vienna Blood’

Vienna Blood

Broadcasters ORF in Austria and ZDF in Germany have ordered a second season crime of drama Vienna Blood.

The series is produced by Red Arrow Studios-owned UK-based Endor Productions and Austria’s MR Film and based on the best-selling Liebermann novels by Frank Tallis. It is distributed globally by Red Arrow Studios International.

Three new 90-minute episodes have been commissioned for delivery next year, once again adapted by Deep State and Sherlock scribe Steve Thompson. Broadcasters BBC Two in the UK and PBS in the US have both picked up the second season following successful runs of season one.

The show has sold to a range of other countries, including France, Spain, Finland, China, Japan and other territories across Central and Eastern Europe.

Vienna Blood follows young English doctor Max Liebermann (Matthew Beard), and Detective Inspector Oskar Rheinhardt (Juergen Maurer) as they investigate a series of unusual and disturbing murders in 1900s Vienna.

Endor Productions is behind projects such as Deep State and Roald Dahl’s Esio Trot, while MR Film made Maximilian and Das Sacher.

Hilary Bevan Jones of Endor Productions said: “Vienna proved to be wonderful to film in and we are delighted that the city has opened up again following the Coronavirus shutdown so that we can film there late summer.

“Steve Thompson has written three more compelling stories, all inspired by Frank Tallis’ gripping Liebermann novels. And we are delighted to have Matthew Beard and Juergen Maurer again heading a fantastic international cast as well as Robert Dornhelm returning with his singular directorial vision.”
