"Islam means to accept or submit oneself to the Islamic concept of God, who is referred to as Allah. Ramadhan is the holiest month in the Islamic calendar. Every Muslim worldwide, from all walks of life, abstains from food and water from dawn till dusk. It is also the time to reflect upon themselves and their faith towards their belief. The meaning behind Ramadhan is to strengthen one’s self-discipline as well as remind people of the experience of those less fortunate than themselves. Salam Ramadhan - China will explore the different ways of how Muslims around the world usher in their holiest month of the Islamic year. For the first season, we will focus on the Chinese-Muslims in China. Islam was first brought into China in 651 AD, a few decades after the death of Prophet Mohammed (s.a.w). The first major Muslim settlers in China were from Persia and Central Asia, and by the time of the Song Dynasty, Muslims came to dominate the import/export industry in China. Muslims live in every region in China, and it is estimated that there are about 28 million Muslims in China. There is an ever-growing interest in China’s development. In addition, there is the common misconception around the world that if you practice Islam, you are either Malay, Arabic, or of Middle Eastern descent. To address these factors, Salam Ramadhan - China will show that even people who are culturally distinctive can share the same beliefs and practices. "
