The HBO and Sky-produced Chernobyl has been named the best mini-series at this year’s Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards, with its star Jared Harris also taking best leading actor.

The series, based on the nuclear disaster, took two of the top awards as the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) announced this year’s winners at the annual ceremony celebrating and rewarding the very best programmes and performances on British TV in 2019.

The awards were hosted by actor and comedian Richard Ayoade on a closed set at Television Centre, London, with presenters including screen stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Jeff Goldblum and Jessica Hynes.

US filmmaker Ava DuVernay, meanwhile, won the second Bafta of her career with US crime drama When They See Us winning in the international category.

Channel 4 and Netflix dark comedy End Of The F***ing World took the award for best drama series, while Channel 4’s Stath Lets Flats picked up the accolade for best scripted comedy.

Dave series Taskmaster won for comedy entertainment programme, while best entertainment programme outright was awarded to BBC1’s Strictly Come Dancing.

Race Across the World received the Bafta for reality and constructed factual programme, while The Misadventures Of Romesh Ranganathan, won in the features category and Brain In Gear won the Bafta for short form programme. All three shows originally aired on BBC2.
