Amazon fast-tracks ‘The Boys’ spin-off after global success

A spin-off to Amazon’s comic book series The Boys is in the works, featuring a new batch of young superheroes.

Amazon has reportedly been developing the project for some time, but has now been fast-tracked following the strong performance of the second season of the show on the Prime Video streaming service.

The as-yet-unnamed spinoff is being written by The Boys executive producer Greg Rosenberg, and is to be set at a US college exclusive to young superheroes – run by sinister corporation Vought International.

According the The Hollywood Reporter, the series is described as part college show and part Hunger Games with the hormonal superheroes putting their powers – and their morality – to the test as they compete for the best contracts in the outside world.

While Amazon doesn’t reveal detailed viewing figures for its shows, the streamer previously confirmed that The Boys‘ second season received the most-watched global debut ever for an Amazon original series, and over its first two weeks, increased on season one viewership by 89%.

The spin-off is being produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television in association with Grey Point Pictures, Kripke Enterprises and Original Film.

Rosenberg is also attached to exec produce alongside The Boys showrunner Eric Kripke, as well as Point Grey’s Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg and James Weaver and Original Film’s Neal H. Moritz and Pavun Shetty.

The Boys launched on Prime Video last year, based on the 2006-2012 comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, who are attached as executive producers on the original show as well as the upcoming spin-off. It follows a team of vigilantes as they combat super-powered individuals who abuse their abilities while hiding behind heroic personas.

The second season premiered on Prime Video earlier this month and a third has already been ordered. The cast is headed by Karl Urban (Star Trek, The Lord Of The Rings), alongside Jack Quaid, Antony Starr and Erin Moriarty.
