Amazon Studios is to end sci-fi drama The Expanse with a sixth and final season.

The announcement comes ahead of the worldwide premiere of the season five of the Amazon Original series on 16 December.

Produced by Alcon Television Group and based on the novels by author James S.A. Corey, The Expanse is set in the far future where humanity has colonised the solar system, but the people of Earth, Mars and the asteroid belt have long been in opposition with one another.

When the crew of a spaceship stumbles upon ancient alien technology, the balance of power shifts and brings the solar system to the brink of war.

The Expanse is adapted for the screen by writing duo Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby who executive produce the series alongside showrunner Naren Shankar, Andrew Kosove, Broderick Johnson, Laura Lancaster, Sharon Hall, Sean Daniel and Jason Brown of Hivemind, Daniel Abraham, Ty Franck and Dan Nowak.

The series originally aired on NBCUniversal-owned Syfy, which cancelled the series in 2018 following its third season. Amazon Prime picked up the show last year, beginning with season four.

“We’d like to thank Naren, Andrew, Broderick, everyone at Alcon and the entire cast and crew of The Expanse for the hard work and love they have put into the series over these past seasons,” said Vernon Sanders, co-head of television at Amazon Studios. “We’re very happy we can give the incredibly loyal and passionate fans of The Expanse the satisfying conclusion to the series that they deserve. We know they’ll love how seasons five and six unfold.”
